Clearly, some in the GOP continue to be gobsmacked by the activities, or perhaps antics, of their party Chair Michael Steele. One has to admit that it isn't the best sign that a party is in sync when leaders within the party are caught completely off guard by the publication of a book by its party Chair about the ways that the GOP could "come back" in Obama's America.
And don't think that Steele is terribly pressed about the shock. He is definitely doing his own thing, and telling folks about themselves in the process. Check this article from the Washington Post, where Steele essentially says put up or shut up, if you don't like how he is doing his job. The man has balls, because I know that some of those white folks are pissed that he is not completely towing a line. Hell, both Steele and Newt Gingrich have talked about the way that some white folks in the GOP have a problem with Steele simply because he's black.
It will be interesting to see if Steele actually remains the Chair of the RNC, and if he does not, I will enjoy hearing the reasons, real and/or imagined, for his departure. And with the state of the GOP, I would not be surprised if some are thinking that Sarah Palin may be a more appropriate choice for the RNC Chair.
UPDATE: Well this is an interesting development. LOL

I think the main gripe within the GOP establishment about Steele is that instead of doing the quiet, bureaucratic work behind the scenes of raising money and recruiting candidates to run for office, he's been putting himself on every talk show he can find, giving speeches for pay, and now writing a book.
In other words, he seems to have more interest in promoting himself than he does in promoting the party.
So...you really think the Queen of Self Promotion, Ms. Palin, would look like an attractive alternative?
Hehe.
I kinda admire -- in a dropped-WAY-too-much-acid-as-a-young-man kind of way -- the way Steele has given some tough love to the GOP, albeit in a pretty self-serving way.
This IS the century of self promotion, after all. And I don't mind someone being all self centered as long as they can be a bit constructive while they do it.
His leadership is in STARK contrast with Robert M. Duncan (who is from my home county) in that Duncan was more behind the scenes, nuts and bolts while Steele is more center stage, direct the circus. I don't doubt that there is some quasi racism sentiment in the criticism of Steele, but I think it's more to do with the shock of his style in comparison to what the party has been used to.
But the awkward street talking Steele has some good points for the GOP, if they can stop the seizures long enough to listen.
The evil, hate-the-GOP man in me would LOVE to see Palin in charge ... that would be such a hoot!
Jeff the state of the Republican Party is just fine. We are poised to win the midterm elections. The banter about Chairman Steele is much ado about nothing.
He is certainly marching to his own drum which is not in line with the methodical nature of the Republican Party, but he has been embraced as much as you can expect a boisterous Chairman to be embraced.
I really don't like the statements by Chairman Steele and my man Newt because it simply pushes to the side the many legitimate disagreements some in the party have with Chairman Steele. Our party is better for having Chairman Steele and the party leadership knows that.
