I realize that for most people this is WFT? but to me, it speaks to the issue of precedent. If there is a precedent for shutting down debate that conflicts with the majority view, you must root out the original case/cause and reverse all to that point.
You can't tell me that other senators who might have had questioned about the rightness of executive or legislative actions hadn't been shut down prior to 2002, and therefore chose not offer comment. It's human nature and senators, with all of their power, are human and want to be liked by their colleagues.
Remember how Kerry and Edwards (and Hillary Clinton), when running against Bush said they had doubts about the Iraq invasion, but didn't want to upset the status quo? Do you think that the idea of being smacked down in committee debate didn't play a small role in that?
McCain is a opportunist, always has been.If he forgot, it's because of number of the changes in direction he's made over the course of his career have left him befuddled.
